Amazon’s Big Deal Days mark the start of sale season 🏁

Last week, Amazon’s Big Deal Days became the retail giant's largest-ever October holiday sales event. While exact figures remain undisclosed, Amazon reported “hundreds of millions of items sold”, with over 25 million items bought by US Prime members — many with same-day or next-day delivery. This follows a highly successful Prime Day earlier this year, where members saved more than $1 billion.

Retailers have clearly taken note. More players joined the early holiday shopping trend, with 82% of online merchants offering promotions on the first day of Amazon's 48-hour sale. In an attempt to boost their own conversions, competitors like Walmart and Target launched concurrent events, effectively extending the holiday shopping season beyond its traditional timeframe.

This early start to sales and holiday shopping is a signal for brands to take action. Consumers are already actively looking for deals and appear eager to make purchases. On the flip side, Digital Commerce 360 reported that consumers this year are displaying a strong focus on budgeting, highlighting the possibility that some have started buying gifts for the holidays early, spreading their spend limit over the next few months.

As the cost of living crisis causes shoppers to be more selective about how and what they buy, this year’s deals will need to be extra enticing, offering plenty of value. Customers will likely think twice before spending impulsively, and many are likely to hedge their bets and wait for discounts to deepen.

Growth hacking — increase your mailing list ✉️

In light of the approaching promotional period, you should be doing everything you can as a brand to boost the numbers in your database. Here are five simple techniques to make sure you’re reaching high numbers with your BFCM campaigns. 

Collect emails everywhere

Start simple. Your email collection efforts should be visible in every possible corner — your homepage, blogs, social media platforms, event sign-ups, content posts, YouTube videos, and even comment sections. Wherever your brand interacts with people, offer them the chance to join your community for exclusive value. 

Encourage sharing

Get those already on your email list to spread the word. When someone signs up, offer an incentive for them to forward the email to their friends. You can create a pre-populated email link for users to easily share the content.

The content upgrade hack

Create engaging content, break it into a free section and an opt-in section, and distribute the free part on the web. When people want the full version, they need to opt-in. You can also offer a way for them to forward it to friends in exchange for handing over any info. 

Give them a choice

People love options. Instead of a single email list, provide multiple opt-ins. Research suggests that consumers prefer this. 

Opt-In on high-traffic pages

Identify your high-traffic pages using analytics tools and ensure there's an email opt-in component. Maximise your visibility where it counts!
